David J. W. Klauser

Ho-Chunk

David James (D.J.) Whitehorse Klauser, Manape Huk (Soldier Chief), has been an ICS board member since 1996, and has served at its chair since 2003. He is employed as an Assistant State Public Defender. Klauser serves as a Major in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, having returned in 2008 from active duty deployment in Iraq. Klauser has previously served as the Attorney General of the Ho-Chunk Nation and as staff legal counsel for the U.S. Small Business Administration. At the SBA Klauser focused on creating incentives for American Indian participation in SBA entrepreneurial programs. In addition to serving as an adjunct professor of Indian Law at Marquette University Law School, D.J. also served as a director of the Milwaukee Indian Health Board. Klauser has a bachelor’s degree in marketing and finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a law degree and an advanced law degree from the UW-Madison Law School.

Diane Amour

Diane Amour, Ogiimaa-giizhigookwe (Chief Sky Woman) is a senior adviser/coordinator for American Indian Student Services at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), has been active in the education community for many years, serving on the Wisconsin American Indian Language and Culture Education Board, and a delegate to the White House Conference on Indian Education. She is a founding member of the Milwaukee Indian Education Committee and is a past board member of the Wisconsin Indian Education Association. Amour also serves as a director of the Indian Summer Festival Board. As a member of the ICS board, Amour is committed to ensuring ICS's cultural and academic curricula are both excellent and integrally linked.

Anne Egan-Waukau

Menominee

Anne Egan-Waukau is the Media Relations Specialist for the Wisconsin Education Association Council, which represents 98,000 teacher and Education Support Professionals who work in the state's great schools. She provides media and public relations assistance to local member associations throughout the state. Anne also assists WEAC with advertising campaigns, video production, and state-wide Public Relations programs. She is the liaison to WEAC's Public Relations Committee and is on the board of the Wisconsin School Public Relations Association.

Carmen Flores

Oneida

Carmen Flores began her service on the board as one of two ICS board members elected by the parents of ICS students. Currently Flores is an Administrative Assistant at the Southeastern Oneida Tribal Services Office, a satellite office of the Oneida Indians of Wisconsin. Carmen was a member of ICS’s Parent Council for 6 years, and a co-spokesperson for two years. Flores, whose children are ICS graduates, believes that parents should be active participants in their children’s educations.

Jone Stromberg

Ojibwe/Red Cliff

Jone Stromberg has worked in Milwaukee's Indian community for more than 28 years. From 1999 until 2008 she served as the Executive Director of the Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center--a comprehensive urban health facility for American Indians. Ms. Stromberg has served in a number of other administrative roles including Executive Director for the Indian Council of the Elderly, Assistant to the Director of the Milwaukee Area American Indian Manpower Council (currently Spotted Eagle High School), and Director of Allied Health at the Milwaukee Indian Health Board. Stromberg has served as an officer and/or director of numerous non-profit community boards and commissions. As a member of the ICS board, Stromberg is committed to accomplishing the School's mission by hard work, dedication and effective strategic planning. She serves as the treasurer of the ICS Board.

Sommer Drake

Oneida

My name is Sommer Drake and I am a member of the Oneida Nation. I currently work for the Milwaukee Public School district as a third grade teacher. I am a graduate of the Urban American Indian Teacher Training Program hosted through U.W. Milwaukee. During the two-year process, I worked with the students and teachers in the classrooms at I.C.S. to help earn my teaching degree. I also hold a Psychology degree from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. I enrolled my son at I.C.S. to give him an education that offered him the diversity of cultural teachings that other schools could not provide; he is in the fourth grade this year. As an elected parent board member and as an educator, it is my mission to ensure that I.C.S. is providing students not only with a safe learning environment, but also with the best education, both academically and culturally, to ensure each students success. Through my active participation, I hope to encourage other parents to take an active role in the school such that we can show our children how much we truly value education. I believe the better connections we can make between home and school the higher student achievement will be.

Justin Thundercloud

Justin Thundercloud joined the board as a parent elected board member in June 2009. He graduated from Concordia University Wisconsin with a Major in History and a Minor in Educational Studies in 2006. He has been a coach and member of the support staff at Saint Thomas More High School since 2006 where he also started the Native Circle, a student group for Indian students. He has 15 years coaching experience, most recently as a Varsity assistant for Saint Thomas More Football and Girls' basketball teams and as a youth hockey coach for Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin. He is excited to have his two sons, Alexander and Marcus, enrolled at ICS because of the great cultural and academic opportunities and he is committed to the longterm success of the Indian Community School and its students.
