She·kú, my name is Shelly Cornelius-Roman. The 2015-2016 school year marks my fifteenth year of working for Indian Community School. My educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Philosophy from Alverno College and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
In my role as social worker I offer support to students who are referred to me by parents, staff, or by self referral. I meet with teachers, administrators and other school staff to determine the best way to meet the needs of students who may be struggling behaviorally, emotionally, or socially at school.
My current responsibilities include weekly instruction of the Second Step program in one classroom at each grade level. Second Step is a social skills curriculum that our school utilizes. I am also responsible for assisting students and families who are struggling with regular school attendance. Further, I am also on our school's leadership team for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
One of the after school programs that I am a part of that I would like all families to be aware of is the Families And Schools Together (FAST) program. ICS has been offering the FAST program for the past decade or so. As a family centered, parent empowerment program I cannot say enough about how great it is to work with families and see parents working so hard with their children to be positive and caring role models. If you have a chance to participate in our FAST programming I hope you will join us.
Lastly, please let me add that as a Native person in our urban community I believe I am very lucky to work at ICS. I have experienced the benefits of seeing two of my children graduate from ICS and move on to be successful high school and now college students. Further, I am now enjoying watching an even younger generation from my family develop as a learner at ICS.
As we head into this new school year I have many hopes and aspirations for my own continued learning as well as for each of our school children. If there is anything you need assistance with or if you become concerned about anthing regarding your child please feel free to reach out for assistance.
S.O.A.R. like an eagle the ICS way and have a great day!
Ms. Shelly Cornelius-Roman
