Family Involvement
The Family Resource Center (FRC) provides opportunities for families served by the Indian Community School to engage in parenting classes and support groups; referrals for family assistance and networking; and school volunteer opportunities. The Center is closely tied to the ICS Parent Council when developing parent programs, training opportunities and family adventures in the Milwaukee area.
The FRC also provides for the nationally recognized Parents As Teachers (PAT) program for families of infants and children 0-4 years of age. PAT is a home based approach for early childhood parent education and family support serving families throughout pregnancy until their child is four years old. The program is designed to enhance child development and school achievement through parent education accessible to all families.
The Families And Schools Together (FAST) Program is provided through the FRC. The Indian Community School is the only school in the United States certified to provide FAST Baby, Early Childhood FAST, Elementary School FAST and Middle School FAST programs. What is FAST?
Families And Schools Together (FAST) is a well-researched, theory-based program for children and their families. It is designed to build protective factors for children and empower parents to be the primary prevention agents for their children. To date, FAST has been implemented in over 700 communities around the world. FAST has reached children aged 3 weeks to 15 years in rural, suburban, and urban communities.
FAST applies family stress theory, family systems theory, social ecological theory of child development, and adult education and community development theory to achieve its four goals:
- Enhance family functioning
- Prevent the target child from experiencing school failure
- Prevent substance abuse by the child and other family members
- Reduce the stress that parents and children experience from daily life situations
